CategoryA hand-painted maiolica vase featuring two animals with intertwined necks—possibly peacocks or goshawks—and a Renaissance-style design inspired by historic Faenza ceramics held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Animals with intertwined necks are a characteristic motif on commemorative ceramics, such as Amor Regnat plates; they symbolize union and are therefore frequently chosen as gifts for weddings, anniversaries, and other occasions celebrating a couple’s relationship.
On the other side of the vessel, two clasped hands appear beneath the inscription FIDES OMNIA (in the design, the “n” is concealed within the scroll); literally, this means “trust/fidelity in all things” and is a variant of the famous Latin motto Fides omnia vincit (faith/fidelity/trust conquers all). Handshake frequently appear at the entrances to potters’ workshops or homes as a sign of welcome.
Overall, the vase’s ornamentation conveys messages of unity, inclusiveness, and mutual trust, sealing bonds of friendship or love.
Blue flames—decorative elements typical of the 15th century—are painted on the neck of the vessel; the body features an elaborate pattern of scrolling stems enclosing rosettes and palmettes, while the foot displays “egg-and-dart” (or pavona) motifs.
Dimensions of the Renaissance-style vase: 38 cm in height, 28 cm in width.
