Anthony the Great 32.5 cm

Ceramic panel depicting Saint Anthony the Abbot in relief. Enriched by a frame at the top, this majolica is enameled and hand painted in our workshop in Faenza.

Saint Anthony is depicted wearing a monastic habit, barefoot and with a halo, while reading the sacred scriptures. At his feet is a cow, the inevitable pig and a lively little fire. Saint Anthony the Abbot is in fact the patron saint of domestic animals and livestock: his image is traditionally posted in stables and farmyards, but also in farmers’ homes. The Saint is also the protector of workers with fire.

The ceramists of Faenza, who at the time of the wood-fired oven needed a lot of fire, did not fail to elaborate images of the saint painted on majolica: not only on panels for posting, but also on artifacts and jugs that had the purpose of invoking the protection of the Saint.

The feast of Anthony the Great is celebrated on January 17. For the occasion, animals and ovens are blessed, placing them under the protection of the saint.
