The scene is inspired by the traditional iconography of Saint Michael, who was portrayed and sculpted in this manner several times in the past centuries.

Saint Michael is recognized as an archangel by the three main monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Catholicism he is remembered for being:

• the supreme commander of the Lord’s army, who defeated Satan and the fallen angels
• the person in charge of assisting the dying, giving them the chance to save their souls before death
• he who weighs the merits of souls on the Day of Judgment, which is why he is often depicted with scales
• the guardian of the Church, protector of the Blessed Sacrament, of the Pope and of the people of Israel.
