Saint Anthony is depicted wearing a monastic habit, sandals on his feet and a halo, with one hand blessing and the other holding a staff with a bell (the bell announced the arrival of the Antonian monks and was used to drive away evil spirits).

At the feet of the saint are two animals – a dog and a hen – because Saint Anthony is the protector of domestic animals and livestock: for this reason his image is traditionally displayed in stables and farmyards, but also in farmers’ homes. The Saint is also the protector of workers with fire, therefore bakers, firefighters and even ceramists!
