Apothecary jar 30.5 cm Dog Rose

Ceramic apothecary jar hand painted with Garofano decoration and “Rosa canina” (dog rose) writing in the cartouche. At one time the cartouche was positioned according to the height of the shelf on which the vase was to be placed, so that it could also be seen from below.

Dog rose is a shrub that boasts anti-inflammatory properties for the respiratory tract and owes its name, in particular the appellative “canina”, to the naturalist writer Pliny the Elder who narrated the story of a Roman soldier bitten by a dog and cured of anger thanks to a decoction of the roots of this rose, since then defined as “canine”.
