The Virgin Mary holds broken arrows in her hands: these are the “arrows of divine justice“, a symbol of the 1400 pestilence that struck the city of Faenza (as well as in other centers of northern Italy). It is said that, after incessant prayers, the Madonna appeared to some devotees wrapped in a cloak and holding broken arrows in her hands; at that moment the plague disappeared from the city.
