CategoryApothecary jar hand painted in Pavona style with “Artemisia” written in the cartouche.
The Pavona (peahen) is a decorative style of ceramics widespread in Faenza since the fifteenth century and inspired by the eye of a peacock feather. Inspired by a theme of oriental origin alluding to the rising sun, in the Christian context it is a symbol of resurrection.
This majolica vase is thought to contain artemisia, a plant with a sedative and expectorant effect used against coughs and various kinds of pain.
Dimensions: 30 cm high, 13,5 cm maximum diameter.
(The white spots on the majolica are due to the reflection effect of the photograph)
