Apothecary jar with cover for Belladonna, hand-decorated in a traditional Faenza style called “Melograno” (pomegranate).

Belladonna berry juice was used in the sixteenth century as a female cosmetic. However, this plant was better known for its poisonous berries, which, when swallowed, hit the stomach and caused the blockage of the parasympathetic nervous system. Today it makes use of belladonna extracts in herbal medicine and homeopathy for its anti-inflammatory, sedatives and anesthetics effects.
