Apothecary jar 37 cm Altea

Spool-shaped vase, called albarello, typical of apothecary jars.

This majolica is hand-painted with the Peacock Feather Eye pattern and the inscription “Altea” (Marshmallow) in the cartouche.

Marshmallow is a medicinal herb that grows in moist places such as ditches, canals and embankments. It has emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, and is used as a natural remedy for dry coughs, pharyngitis, bronchitis and other ailments of the upper respiratory tract. Its roots were once given to infants to chew to soothe teething pains.
