Plate ø 62 cm “Le Poème de l’âme”

Large majolica plate decorated with Raphaelesques and Madonna with Child Jesus inspired by a painting by Louis Janmot.

The center of this plate is taken from the pictorial cycle Le Poème de l’âme, the most important work of the French painter Louis Janmot. The detail of the celestial Madonna accompanied by the Child Jesus holding out her arms is a sweet image that recalls the paintings of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, by which Janmot was influenced.

Looking at the plate, both the colors and the delicacy of the decorations on the brim, with the putti surrounding the centre, the small flowers (as an iconographic homage) and the green color that recalls the Madonna’s mantle contribute to restoring a unique image, coordinated in the decorations of the brim and the center.

Painted in 1987 – as evidenced by the handwritten signature on the back – it is a four-handed work signed by Laura Silvagni and her master Giovanni Pretolani. Pretolani produced the dusting of the decorations and carried out the brim, creating an accurate decoration also with the intention of teaching and transmitting to all the ceramists of our workshop the craft of painting on majolica.

The plate is also suitable to be affixed as a sacred image above the headboard.
